Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Who can apply for a Western New York Foundation grant?
We welcome Letters of Intent (LOIs) for all our grant programs from organizations dedicated to local and regional food systems work, especially those organizations who are empowering communities to create a more regional, sustainable, and self-sufficient food system.
Additionally, our iCAP programs invite LOIs from arts and culture organizations or organizations serving rural communities.
Is the Western New York Foundation funding directed toward a specific geographical area?
Yes, we only accept requests from organizations headquartered in the seven counties of Western New York: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, and Wyoming.
What are your grant priorities?
As mentioned above, our primary focus is on our local and regional food system. Specifically, we are looking for or innovative individuals with the resources needed to develop and implement sustainable solutions that build a thriving and equitable food system reflecting the community it serves. We prioritize food system nonprofits dedicated to the wellbeing of BIPOC communities, families disproportionately impacted by poverty, immigrants and refugees, and disadvantaged people in rural areas. We support efforts that work to decrease social inequities and challenge the disparities of conventional food systems.
Are food pantries eligible to apply?
Due to the large number of food pantries in Western New York, we are unable to support the capacity of food pantries at this time.
What does the Western New York Foundation not support?
The Western New York Foundation does not award grants to individuals, unless otherwise specified; religious organizations for religious purposes; political organizations, campaigns, and candidates; and municipal and government. We also do not award grants for endowments; scholarships; capital campaigns; or operating expenses.
If my organization does not have its own 501(c)3 status and operates under a fiscal sponsor, are we still eligible to apply?
If your organization is fiscally sponsored and meets all other eligibility requirements, you are eligible to apply for Food for Thought Program or iCAP Core.
What is the best means of initial contact with the Western New York Foundation?
First, carefully read the Grant Program page under the For Grantseekers tab on our website. If you believe your request aligns with the Western New York Foundation’s interests, please introduce your organization by submitting a Letter of Intent (LOI) or contacting the Foundation’s Program Officer, Lvanosten@wnyfoundation.org or (716) 839-4225.
How do I apply for a grant?
Organizations can apply through our grant portal here. If you are unsure whether your project is a good fit, please contact the Foundation’s program officer to discuss.
How much should I ask for?
The request amount should be based on your organization and project budget, as well as the overall needs of your organization. Grants can range from $5,000 to $50,000. Please note that we typically do not award high-level grants ($20,000+) to first-time applicants.
What are the deadlines for grant requests?
We have two grant rounds annually. You can find the deadlines at the bottom of the page here.
Will there be a site visit?
If your organization is selected to submit an application, our staff will contact you to arrange a site visit or meeting, either in-person or virtually. Staff and Western New York Trustees will attend these visits with as many organizations as time and travel schedules permit. We strive to meet with all organizations that apply.
How will my organization be notified if we are approved for a grant?
Grants are approved at the foundation’s meetings in November and May. Grantees will be notified by email within two weeks following the meeting.
